Ipswich Town and Southampton played out a dramatic 2–2 draw at St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday night, keeping the Championship promotion battle alive until the final day of the season.
The result means Ipswich Town remain on the brink of a Premier League return, while Southampton’s hopes of automatic promotion have ended, though they are confirmed for the play-offs.
The match began cautiously, with both sides failing to break the deadlock in a goalless first half. The game then exploded into life after the break.
Ipswich struck first through Wes Burns in the 48th minute, finishing a well-worked move to give the visitors the advantage. However, Southampton responded strongly, with Ryan Manning levelling the score on 58 minutes via a deflected free-kick.
The hosts then turned the game around when Cyle Larin produced a composed finish in the 80th minute, putting Southampton 2–1 ahead and briefly putting them on course for a crucial win.
But Ipswich refused to give in. Substitute Jack Clarke made a decisive impact, equalising in the 87th minute with a low strike from the edge of the box to make it 2–2.
The closing stages were frantic, with both teams pushing for a winner. Ipswich came agonisingly close when Clarke hit the post and later forced a superb save in stoppage time, while a late Ipswich goal was ruled out for offside.
The draw leaves Ipswich Town needing a victory against QPR on the final day to secure promotion. Southampton, meanwhile, will turn their attention to the play-offs in their bid to return to the Premier League.
Ipswich remain unbeaten in 18 matches, and manager Kieran McKenna will take confidence from another resilient performance in a high-pressure encounter.
The match has been widely described as one of the most exciting Championship games of the season, with promotion still undecided heading into the final round.
