Apple’s next major venture into the smart home ecosystem could arrive as early as next year, according to a recent Bloomberg report. The tech giant is reportedly working on two innovative smart home devices, including a high-end tabletop device equipped with an iPad-like display and a robotic arm. Both devices are expected to run on a newly developed operating system, potentially named homeOS, and are poised to reshape how users interact with smart home technology.

A new class of smart home devices

The flagship product, internally codenamed J595, is expected to feature an iPad-style display attached to a robotic arm capable of movement and rotation. This robotic limb will allow the screen to reposition itself automatically based on user commands, making it highly interactive and customizable. For example, users could say, “Look at Me”, and the screen would pivot towards the speaker, allowing for hands-free, voice-activated adjustments. The device’s actuators will likely enable the screen to tilt and rotate 360 degrees, providing an adaptive viewing experience from any angle.

In addition to the top-tier device, Apple is also developing a more affordable version, codenamed J490, which will serve as a streamlined control hub for home automation. This lower-end model will be designed for wall attachment or desktop placement and is expected to include a display suitable for managing home devices and supporting communication tools such as FaceTime. Though less advanced than the premium model, the J490 will still provide a robust smart home experience, optimized for users looking for a versatile and connected display system.

Integrating AI and Apple’s ecosystem

One of the most exciting aspects of these new devices is their potential to leverage Apple Intelligence (AI) to provide more personalized and intuitive interactions. These AI-powered features are expected to enhance how users manage household appliances, entertainment systems, and even their daily routines. With Apple’s existing Siri voice assistant integrated into both devices, users will likely experience a higher level of automation and smart home control through voice commands.

Apple’s current lineup of home devices includes the Apple TV, HomePod, and HomePod Mini. However, these new devices mark a significant evolution in Apple’s approach to the smart home, as they combine visual displays with advanced robotics and AI. The introduction of homeOS, a new operating system tailored for these smart home devices, will play a critical role in unifying Apple’s home ecosystem. While tvOS powers the Apple TV, homeOS is expected to build on macOS and iOS foundations, integrating features from tvOS to deliver a comprehensive user experience tailored for smart home management.

Home OS and smart display capabilities

The forthcoming homeOS is anticipated to offer a suite of applications optimized for the smart home experience. According to Bloomberg’s report, the lower-end smart display (J490) will run apps like Calendar, Notes, and Home, giving users a centralized interface to manage daily tasks and control their household devices. The interface will likely be designed to streamline interactions with Apple’s ecosystem, from scheduling events to turning off lights or adjusting the thermostat—all from a single display.

For the higher-end J595 model, Apple’s vision is more ambitious. By combining the flexibility of a robotic arm with an iPad-like screen, Apple aims to create a dynamic device that serves not only as a smart home hub but also as a versatile media center. Users could interact with the screen while cooking in the kitchen or lounging in the living room, and the device would adjust its orientation based on voice commands, enhancing convenience and immersion.

Launch timeline and market positioning

Apple’s smart home ambitions are expected to materialize as soon as 2024 for the lower-end model, with the high-end robotic home device potentially launching in 2025. While both devices will offer advanced functionality, Apple is likely to position the J490 as a more accessible, mass-market option, appealing to users who want basic smart home features without the premium price tag. The J595, on the other hand, will cater to early adopters and those looking for the most cutting-edge technology available for home automation.

These devices will complement Apple’s broader strategy of building a cohesive ecosystem of interconnected smart products, ranging from wearables like the Apple Watch to entertainment devices like Apple TV. By introducing a smart home device with a display and AI capabilities, Apple is signaling its intent to compete directly with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub Max, both of which already feature smart displays and AI-powered controls. However, Apple’s integration of a robotic arm and more sophisticated AI could differentiate its products from competitors, setting a new standard for smart home devices.

As Apple prepares to enter the next phase of smart home innovation, the upcoming devices equipped with iPad-like displays and AI features represent a significant leap forward in how we interact with technology at home. With homeOS at the core, Apple’s foray into smart home automation could redefine the user experience, making homes smarter, more adaptive, and deeply integrated into the Apple ecosystem. While we wait for the official launch, these reports suggest that Apple’s new smart home devices could become a game-changer in the world of home automation by 2025.
