Priyanka Gandhi to debut with Wayanad LS by poll nomination; Hold roadshow

In a significant move that marks her electoral debut, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to file her nomination papers on Wednesday for the Lok Sabha bypoll in Wayanad, Kerala. This is her first foray into direct electoral politics, signaling a new phase in her political career. The bypoll is a high-stakes election, necessitated after her brother Rahul Gandhi vacated the Wayanad seat following his dual victory in the 2019 general elections, where he also won from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh.

Priyanka arrived in Wayanad’s hill district on Tuesday night, accompanied by her mother, Sonia Gandhi, who serves as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary party. Their arrival has generated significant excitement and anticipation among party workers and supporters in the region. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, arrived shortly after and are expected to join Priyanka when she submits her nomination papers before the District Collector on Wednesday.

The event is set to be a major show of strength for the Congress party, with key party figures, including the chief ministers of Congress-ruled states, senior AICC (All India Congress Committee) leaders, and numerous party workers expected to rally behind Priyanka. Their presence aims to underline the importance of this election, both for Priyanka’s political journey and the Congress party’s standing in Kerala.

Roadshow in Kalpetta

As part of her campaign, Priyanka Gandhi will kick off the day with a roadshow in Kalpetta, the district headquarters of Wayanad, at 11 AM on Wednesday. She will be joined by her brother Rahul Gandhi, who had previously represented Wayanad in the Lok Sabha and remains a highly popular figure in the constituency. The roadshow is expected to attract a massive crowd of party supporters, who view Priyanka’s candidacy as a new beginning for the Congress in the region.

Following the roadshow, Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi will address the public at a gathering, where she is likely to outline her vision for Wayanad and her approach to local issues. The event is expected to be a blend of Congress’ promises to continue the work initiated by Rahul Gandhi in the constituency and Priyanka’s own agenda for development.

After her public address, Priyanka will head to the District Collector’s office to officially file her nomination for the bypoll. The presence of key party figures is meant to send a clear message of unity and support behind her candidacy.

The battle for Wayanad

Priyanka Gandhi faces a multi-pronged contest in Wayanad, pitted against the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) candidate Sathyan Mokeri and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) nominee, Navya Haridas. Both rivals represent strong political currents in Kerala, a state where electoral battles have traditionally been fiercely fought between the Left and the Congress. The BJP has been trying to expand its influence in Kerala, a state where it has historically struggled, while the LDF remains a formidable opponent, with strong grassroots support.

Sathyan Mokeri, a seasoned leader from the Communist Party of India (CPI), is expected to give a tough fight to Priyanka Gandhi. His candidacy is backed by the Left, which holds a strong base in several parts of Kerala. Meanwhile, Navya Haridas, the BJP’s young candidate, is representing the saffron party’s attempt to make inroads in a constituency that has traditionally sided with either the Congress or the Left.

Significance of the by poll

The Wayanad bypoll holds immense symbolic value for the Congress party, particularly in Kerala, where the party has been striving to reclaim its foothold in recent years. Wayanad is a significant constituency for the Congress, as it provided a safe haven for Rahul Gandhi during the 2019 general elections when the party faced a tough contest in his traditional seat of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. His victory in Wayanad cemented the Gandhi family’s connection to the region, and Priyanka’s candidacy is seen as an effort to strengthen that bond further.

For Priyanka Gandhi, this election represents a new chapter in her political career. Although she has been active in party politics for years, serving as the general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh and campaigning for Congress candidates across the country, this will be her first direct election. It is expected to serve as a litmus test for her political skills and popularity, particularly as she looks to galvanize Congress’ presence in Kerala, a state where the party still holds significant sway.

A crucial moment for congress

The bypoll also comes at a time when the Congress party is striving to regain its political stature at the national level. A victory for Priyanka Gandhi would not only boost her political profile but also provide much-needed momentum for the Congress as it prepares for the upcoming general elections. With the support of her brother Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders, Priyanka’s candidacy is being viewed as a critical moment in the party’s strategy to rebuild its base and present itself as a formidable force in Indian politics.

The outcome of the Wayanad bypoll will be closely watched by political analysts and the public alike, as it could shape the Congress party’s future course and Priyanka Gandhi’s role within it.
