The President-Elect of the United States, Donald Trump, is Expected to Bring Significant Changes to the Country’s Governing Style

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to assume office, experts anticipate sweeping changes in American governance. Known for his unconventional approach, Trump’s administration promises to redefine government operations. Among these initiatives is the announcement of a new entity: the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This proposed department will be led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and Indian-American businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, both known for their innovative approaches and corporate successes.

What is the Department of Government Efficiency?

The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, will be a novel entity in the Trump administration. Rather than functioning as a traditional federal agency, DOGE will operate independently, focusing on government reform and partnering with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). According to Trump, DOGE will have a mandate to “dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies” with an overarching goal of streamlining the federal government.

In a statement, Trump remarked, “DOGE will pave the way for my administration to bring true efficiency to government operations, focusing on saving taxpayer dollars and eliminating red tape.” He added that Musk and Ramaswamy’s leadership would be instrumental in reforming federal bureaucracy and ensuring that government functions with the same efficiency as private enterprise.

Trump went on to describe DOGE’s potential impact, likening it to the “Manhattan Project” of the current era. During World War II, the Manhattan Project led to the development of the first nuclear weapons and was marked by rapid innovation and secrecy. Trump indicated that DOGE would strive for a similar level of innovation and focus, though this time directed at reducing bureaucratic inefficiency.

Transparency and Public Accountability

In a bid to keep the public informed and engaged, Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that DOGE’s actions and initiatives would be made publicly available online. “Transparency will be at the heart of DOGE,” Musk wrote on social media platform X. “If the public thinks we’re cutting something important or failing to eliminate wasteful spending, just let us know!” He also proposed a “leaderboard” that would track and highlight wasteful government expenditures in real-time, aiming to hold federal agencies accountable. Musk described the leaderboard as “both extremely tragic and extremely entertaining,” hinting at the scale of waste he expects to uncover.

Ramaswamy, who had sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 before endorsing Trump, expressed his enthusiasm on X, stating, “We will not go gently, @elonmusk.” His post seemed to underscore DOGE’s commitment to an aggressive approach towards bureaucracy and inefficiency.

Why is Elon Musk Interested?

Musk’s involvement with DOGE has raised questions about his motivations and potential conflicts of interest. As one of the wealthiest individuals globally and CEO of several influential companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, Musk’s relationship with the White House places him in a unique position of influence. Analysts suggest that his support for Trump’s campaign, which included multimillion-dollar contributions, could be part of a broader strategy to shape regulatory policies affecting his businesses.

A recent New York Times article highlighted Musk’s complex relationship with government agencies. SpaceX, his rocket company, plays a key role in NASA’s operations, effectively holding a level of influence over the agency’s launch schedules. SpaceX is also heavily involved with the Department of Defense, which relies on the company to deploy military satellites. Last year, Musk’s companies received nearly $3 billion in government contracts across multiple federal agencies, cementing his role as a significant government contractor.

At the same time, Musk’s businesses have clashed with various regulators. Tesla, for example, is under investigation by multiple federal agencies, addressing concerns ranging from vehicle safety to workplace conditions. Similarly, SpaceX has faced scrutiny for the environmental impact of its rocket launches. Some experts worry that Musk’s role in DOGE could allow him to influence regulators who oversee his companies, potentially leading to conflicts of interest.

Vivek Ramaswamy’s Role

Vivek Ramaswamy, a former GOP presidential candidate and entrepreneur, will work alongside Musk in leading DOGE. Known for his stance on reducing government oversight and promoting free-market principles, Ramaswamy aligns closely with the Trump administration’s vision for streamlined governance. His appointment to DOGE underscores the Trump team’s commitment to introducing new leadership styles and bringing private-sector expertise into government.

Ramaswamy’s experience in the business world and familiarity with regulatory challenges positions him as a valuable partner for Musk in DOGE’s ambitious mission. Both leaders are expected to bring a no-nonsense approach to the department, prioritising productivity and fiscal responsibility.

Looking Forward

As Trump’s inauguration approaches, anticipation around DOGE’s role and impact is building. While some welcome the idea of greater efficiency and transparency in government, others express concerns over the risks associated with placing business leaders in positions that may influence their industries’ regulatory environments.

DOGE’s mission to combat bureaucratic inefficiency and wasteful spending aligns with the broader goals of the Trump administration. However, balancing Musk and Ramaswamy’s private interests with public responsibilities will be crucial to ensuring DOGE’s success and public trust. Whether DOGE will achieve its stated goals or become a source of controversy remains to be seen, but its creation signals a bold, unconventional shift in American governance under Trump’s leadership.
