Dune fans overjoyed by latest revelation about third film

The much-anticipated third instalment of the Dune franchise is reportedly set to begin filming this summer, ahead of a scheduled release in december 2026. This news has thrilled fans of Denis Villeneuve’s epic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi saga, which has already garnered massive critical and commercial success.

Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two surpassed expectations at the global box office, earning over $700 million (£555 million) and securing five oscar nominations. While the previous film concluded the story of Herbert’s first novel, the director has long expressed his desire to adapt Dune Messiah, the second book in the series, to bring Paul Atreides’ character arc to a fitting conclusion.

Reports from April 2024 confirmed that the project was in development, though an official title has yet to be revealed. Now, fresh information from Deadline suggests that filming is expected to commence in mid-to-late summer, as a June start is deemed too soon for the production.

Returning cast and filming locations

Zendaya is likely to reprise her role as chani, but production may have to navigate her packed 2025 schedule, which includes The Odyssey with christopher nolan, a fourth spider-man film, and euphoria season 3. While exact filming locations remain unconfirmed, the previous two Dune films were shot in hungary, Jordan, and Abu Dhabi, suggesting a return to these locations is probable.

Although details remain scarce, this latest update has fuelled excitement among Dune enthusiasts.

One fan exclaimed: “If Messiah is anywhere near as good as the previous films, it deserves Best Picture.” Another wrote: “It’s unbelievable that we will have seen three Dune films within five years. I can’t wait to experience this version of Messiah, likely in Winter 2026 – far earlier than I had expected. This is going to be a heartbreaking finale.”

A third fan added: “Villeneuve is about to cook again. Give this man unlimited budget and creative freedom!”

What dune messiah brings to the story

Set 12 years after the events of the first book, Dune Messiah explores the consequences of Paul Atreides’ reign as emperor of the Known Universe. Having unleashed the Fremen’s devastating jihad across the galaxy, paul struggles with the catastrophic scale of violence he has authorised. Despite his immense power, he finds himself increasingly unable to control the religious extremism that has emerged in his name.

The novel also expands the role of Paul’s sister, Alia, who was briefly portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy in Dune: Part Two. Additionally, it sees the surprising return of Duncan Idaho, played by Jason Momoa in the first film, despite his apparent demise.

At this stage, no casting announcements have been made regarding new characters or returning actors.

A sci-fi epic in the making

Villeneuve’s Dune films have redefined the sci-fi genre, combining grand-scale storytelling with stunning visuals and deep philosophical themes. As anticipation builds for the third film, fans are eager to see how the director will bring Dune Messiah to life, concluding Paul Atreides’ journey in what promises to be a spectacular and emotional finale.

With filming on the horizon and a december 2026 release planned, the wait for the next chapter of Dune is already proving to be an exciting one.
