Overnight strikes deepen as Ukraine targets Russian logistics hub.

More than four and a half years into the war, Russia and Ukraine traded fresh strikes overnight, with Kyiv continuing a strategy of hitting critical Russian infrastructure far from the front lines while Moscow kept up its own bombardment of Ukrainian cities.

Ukraine Strikes “Russia’s Amazon”

In the early hours of Friday, Ukrainian drones struck a logistics hub belonging to Ozon, the Russian e-commerce giant often compared to Amazon, sparking a fire at the facility in Saratov, a city on the Volga River. Regional governor Roman Busargin confirmed drones had damaged civilian infrastructure in the area but reported no casualties. Saratov, home to a major Rosneft oil refinery alongside other industrial and military sites, has become a recurring target for Ukrainian strikes, including another attack earlier in the week.

A separate strike hit an industrial facility in Volgograd, further south, injuring two people and damaging a nearby residential building, according to regional governor Andrei Bocharov. A makeshift shelter was set up at a local school to house residents displaced by the damage. Officials did not specify which facility was hit, though the city is home to a major Lukoil oil refinery.

Kyiv Under Fire

Ukraine’s capital did not escape unscathed. Russian air strikes set fire to a nine-storey apartment building in Kyiv overnight, prompting authorities to urge residents to take shelter as a drone alert sounded across the city. Russia has consistently denied deliberately targeting civilians.

A Pattern of Deep Strikes

The overnight exchanges follow a week of escalating attacks on both sides. Russia has faced accusations of a broader campaign against Ukrainian cities, while Ukraine has pressed ahead with what it has described as some of its deepest strikes of the war, including hits on gas facilities in western Siberia and a major Rosneft-owned refinery in Ryazan, which has remained offline for days after a drone strike knocked out its main processing unit — a facility responsible for nearly 5% of Russia’s total refining output.

Wider Fallout From the War

Beyond the frontline exchanges, the conflict continues to generate ripple effects across Europe and beyond:

  • Human rights concerns: Amnesty International has accused Russia of using coercive and misleading tactics to recruit foreign nationals — many from low-income countries — into its armed forces, often deploying them to combat zones after minimal training.
  • Espionage cases in the UK: A 31-year-old British man has been remanded in custody after being charged with assisting Russian military intelligence and allegedly preparing to sabotage a drone factory in Wiltshire. Separately, Russia’s FSB has arrested a former British Embassy security guard in Moscow, accusing him of passing information on UK diplomats to Ukrainian intelligence.
  • Diplomatic shifts: Reports suggest CIA Director John Ratcliffe is poised to take on a larger role in US-brokered talks between Moscow and Kyiv, even as the White House has pushed back on the characterization of his involvement.
  • Defence innovation: Ukrainian officials say the country’s defence industry is now outpacing NATO allies in developing new battlefield technology, crediting a much faster prototype-to-production cycle than the decade-plus timelines typical of larger Western defence programmes.

The Human Cost

Civilians remain caught in the middle. In Kramatorsk, residents have been left assessing the wreckage of apartment buildings hit by Russian strikes, while in Shostka, in Ukraine’s Sumy region, emergency crews worked to rescue trapped pets after a drone strike killed one person and injured another. Russia, meanwhile, has accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting the Black Sea resort of Sochi with sea drones, an attack it says injured more than two dozen people, including children.

With no sign of a diplomatic breakthrough following last weekend’s talks, both sides appear set to continue their respective campaigns — Russia vowing to keep striking vessels it says are carrying military cargo across the Black Sea, and Ukraine pressing its long-range strategy against Russian industrial and logistics targets.
