Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency has stirred significant controversy just days before its release. The film, which has already created a buzz with its politically charged narrative, is now facing major opposition from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikh community. These prominent Sikh organizations have accused the film of portraying the Sikh community in a negative light and have demanded an immediate ban on its release.
SGPC files FIR against Kangana Ranaut
On Wednesday, SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami held a press conference to voice the committee’s concerns about the film. He revealed that the SGPC has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Kangana Ranaut, expressing strong objections to the film’s content. Dhami argued that Emergency could potentially create a damaging narrative against the Sikh community, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and misrepresentations.
Dhami further emphasized that this is not the first time the Sikh community has been misrepresented in cinema. “In the past, several films have hurt Sikh sentiments due to the misrepresentation of the community in movies,” he stated. He accused the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) of being biased and called for the inclusion of Sikh members on the board to prevent such incidents in the future.
Accusations from the Akal Takht
In addition to the SGPC, Gyani Raghbir Singh, the Jathedar (head) of the Akal Takht, also voiced his strong opposition to Emergency. Singh alleged that the film intentionally portrays Sikhs as separatists, which he believes is part of a larger conspiracy to malign the community’s image. He accused Kangana Ranaut of “deliberately assassinating” the character of Sikhs through the film.
Singh was particularly incensed by the film’s depiction of Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, a controversial figure who has been declared a Qaumi Shaheed (community’s martyr) by Sri Akal Takht Sahib. He argued that the film disrespects Bhindranwale’s legacy and the Sikh community’s collective memory of the anti-Sikh violence of June 1984. “The community can never forget the anti-Sikh brutality of June 1984, and Ranaut’s film is trying to assassinate the character of Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale,” Singh stated.
Singh also expressed disappointment that despite Kangana’s controversial statements about the Sikh community, no action has been taken by the government against her. He called for stricter measures to ensure that films do not incite communal tensions or disrespect any community.
