Kay Burley tipped for GB news switch as sky news exit rumours swirl

Kay Burley, the veteran broadcaster and long-time face of Sky News, is at the centre of industry speculation about her future. After 36 years with the network, reports suggest she may leave her current role as the host of Sky News’ breakfast programme, sparking widespread debate about where she could land next.

Final show looming?

According to Deadline, the 63-year-old journalist is expected to take a break from broadcasting on Thursday, December 19, for the Christmas holidays. Insiders claim, however, that she may not return to her 7am-10am slot in the new year, leading to questions about her long-term plans. A Sky News insider reportedly told the publication:
“It would be massive if she left.”

Burley’s potential departure has set social media abuzz, with fans and critics alike speculating on her next career move.

Bookies’ predictions

Betting experts have joined the fray, predicting that Burley could make the jump to GB News. Odds currently stand at 10/11 for her joining the channel in 2025, positioning her as a potential new face for the fledgling broadcaster. GB News, known for its right-leaning commentary and growing roster of high-profile hires, could be an appealing next step for Burley.

LBC, the popular talk radio network, is another possible destination, with odds of 5/1. Meanwhile, the bookies have also floated a more unexpected move: Burley appearing as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Odds for her joining the hit BBC dance competition are at 7/2, a prospect that has intrigued fans.

Andy Newton, a spokesman for Sportscasting.com, weighed in on the speculation:
“Kay Burley has been a Sky stalwart for 35 years, but if the ‘news’ is correct, her time on the channel looks to be coming to an end. However, away from the desk, Burley also looks a tailor-made Strictly contestant – so the 7/2 on her ‘foxtrotting’ to the hit BBC show next year is also not ruled out.”

Sky news career and legacy

Kay Burley first joined Sky in 1988, becoming one of the channel’s founding presenters when it launched. Over her decades-long tenure, she has covered some of the most significant global events, including the death of Princess Diana, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the births of Royal babies.

Burley transitioned to the breakfast show in 2019 after years hosting her own afternoon slot. Known for her no-nonsense interviewing style and on-screen presence, she has been a defining figure at the network, claiming to have hosted more live television than any other broadcaster.

Her departure, if confirmed, would mark the end of an era for Sky News. Fans and colleagues have already begun to reflect on her contributions to the network and journalism more broadly.

A new chapter?

Despite the buzz, no official confirmation has been made about Burley’s exit or her future plans. Nevertheless, GB News appears to be a strong contender for her next step, as the channel continues to bolster its talent pool to compete with traditional broadcasters.

At the same time, her long-standing reputation as a hard-hitting journalist could make her an ideal fit for LBC’s roster of opinion-led radio hosts. Alternatively, a stint on Strictly Come Dancing could allow Burley to explore a lighter, more entertaining side of her public persona.

Industry speculation

The rumoured exit comes at a time of broader shifts within the UK’s media landscape, with seasoned broadcasters like Burley weighing their options in an industry increasingly defined by streaming platforms, niche networks, and social media.

For now, fans will have to wait and see what Burley decides. Her break over Christmas provides time for reflection, but if the rumours prove accurate, her next move could be announced as early as January.

Farewell or fresh start?

Whether Kay Burley stays at Sky News or embarks on a new chapter elsewhere, her influence on British broadcasting is undeniable. As bookies, insiders, and viewers speculate, one thing is certain: Burley’s next move will be watched closely, cementing her legacy as one of the UK’s most prominent journalists.
