BBC radio 2 poll reveals the UK’s favourite elvis presley song

BBC Radio 2 listeners have spoken, crowning “suspicious minds” as the UK’s favourite elvis presley song in a nationwide poll. Marking what would have been the King of Rock and Roll’s 90th birthday on 8 January 2025, the poll invited fans to select their ultimate Elvis track from a list of his timeless classics. The response was overwhelming, with more than 100,000 votes cast.

The results of the poll, titled your ultimate elvis song, showcased the enduring love and admiration the UK holds for elvis presley’s music. The winning track, “suspicious minds,” released in 1969, was a defining moment in presley’s career, widely celebrated for its powerful vocals and emotional depth. Coming in second was the poignant ballad “In the Ghetto,” followed by the inspirational anthem “If I Can Dream” in third. Rounding out the top five were “Always on my mind” in fourth and the romantic favourite “can’t help falling in love” in fifth place.

The top 10, as voted for by BBC Radio 2 listeners, featured:

  1. “Suspicious minds”
  2. “In the ghetto”
  3. “If i can dream”
  4. “Always on my mind”
  5. “Can’t help falling in love”
  6. “The wonder of you”
  7. “An American Trilogy”
  8. “Burning love”
  9. “I just can’t help believin’”
  10. “Jailhouse rock”

To mark the occasion, your ultimate elvis cong will air on BBC Radio 2 from 3pm to 5pm on New Year’s day, hosted by vernon Kay. The programme will also be available on BBC Sounds. Kay will count down the top 40 Elvis songs and share insights from Priscilla Presley, the King’s former wife, who recorded a heartfelt message for the event. She expressed gratitude to fans, saying:
“To everyone who has voted and shown this outpouring of love ahead of such a special anniversary, it’s wonderful knowing just how much Elvis’s music means to you all and that he lives on through the beautiful memories that remind you of him and his amazing career. I send you all my love.”

Kay, an Elvis enthusiast, was equally thrilled to host the show. “The King has earned another crown,” he announced. “Radio 2 listeners have had their say, and I couldn’t be happier with their favourite hit. To have it introduced by Priscilla Presley is such an honour. I’m a huge Elvis fan, so I can’t wait to bring you two hours of the very best from his incredible catalogue of unforgettable songs.”

Listeners can also look forward to archive interview clips of Elvis, adding a touch of nostalgia to the programme. The broadcast promises to be a fitting tribute to one of the most iconic figures in music history, celebrating a legacy that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Elvis Presley, who passed away in 1977, remains a cultural icon whose music transcends generations. His ability to blend rock and roll, gospel, and ballads has solidified his place as a pioneer in the music industry. Tracks like “Suspicious minds” and “In the ghetto” are as relevant today as they were decades ago, reflecting themes of love, resilience, and social awareness.

This isn’t the first time BBC Radio 2 has brought fans together to celebrate music legends. In October last year, a similar poll crowned the UK’s favourite British group, with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, and girls Aloud competing for the top spot. Such events highlight the station’s commitment to engaging with listeners and celebrating musical heritage.

As fans tune in on new year’s day, the countdown will serve as a reminder of why Elvis Presley remains the undisputed king of rock and roll. With hits that continue to inspire and connect with audiences, his music endures as a timeless testament to his extraordinary talent and charisma. Whether it’s the emotional pull of “suspicious minds” or the social commentary of “In the Ghetto,” Elvis’s songs remain deeply etched in the hearts of millions.
