James Lee Williams, famously known as The Vivienne to fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race, has tragically passed away at the age of 32.

In a statement shared on social media on Sunday evening, The Vivienne’s publicist announced the devastating news:

“It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend.

“James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career.

“We will not be releasing any further details. We please ask that James’s family are given the time and privacy they now need to process and grieve.”

A legacy on drag race and beyond

The Vivienne first rose to prominence as the champion of the inaugural series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019. Their charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent won the hearts of both judges and viewers, securing their place as a trailblazer in the UK drag scene.

Following their win, The Vivienne expanded their impact by competing in the all-winners season of the American RuPaul’s Drag Race, solidifying their reputation as an international drag icon.

Breaking barriers on ice

In 2023, The Vivienne made history by becoming the first drag artist to compete on the British reality series Dancing On Ice. Partnered with professional skater Colin Grafton, The Vivienne dazzled audiences with their skating skills and creative performances. Their journey on the show culminated in a third-place finish, a remarkable achievement that further cemented their status as a pioneer in the entertainment world.

Television appearances and collaborations

Beyond their drag and skating careers, The Vivienne was a familiar face on British television. They appeared alongside drag star Courtney Act on That’s My Jam and participated in popular programmes like Celebrity Karaoke Club, Celebrity Mastermind, and Saturday Night Takeaway.

One particularly memorable moment on Saturday Night Takeaway saw The Vivienne and fellow Drag Race UK winners helping Ant and Dec unveil their own drag alter-egos, delighting fans with their humour and charm.

A life of love and inspiration

The Vivienne’s passing has left a void in the hearts of fans, colleagues, and loved ones. Known for their warmth, kindness, and talent, James Lee Williams touched the lives of many during their short but impactful career.

Tributes have poured in from the drag and entertainment communities, with friends and fellow performers expressing their grief and sharing memories of The Vivienne’s infectious laughter and unwavering positivity.

The importance of privacy

As the public mourns the loss of an extraordinary performer, The Vivienne’s family has requested privacy to grieve and process their loss.

The publicist’s statement emphasised the family’s pride in James’s achievements, which included breaking barriers, challenging norms, and bringing joy to countless fans worldwide.

A lasting impact

The Vivienne’s legacy as a performer, trailblazer, and inspiration will endure for years to come. From their groundbreaking win on Drag Race UK to their historic Dancing On Ice journey, James Lee Williams leaves behind a rich tapestry of accomplishments and memories that celebrate the beauty and power of drag artistry.

As the world remembers The Vivienne, their life stands as a testament to living authentically, embracing creativity, and inspiring others to follow their dreams.
