AlUla, Saudi Arabia – October 21, 2024: Saudi Arabia’s cultural and historical gem, AlUla, is being showcased in a visually striking exhibition in Beijing’s Tian Tan Garden, celebrating the growing cultural ties between Saudi Arabia and China. The exhibit, part of the Saudi Travel Festival, comes in conjunction with the signing of a new strategic agreement between Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture and China’s Ministry of Culture & Tourism, and will run until October 26, 2024.

This exhibition highlights AlUla’s unique natural beauty, its archaeological treasures, and its rich cultural heritage, serving as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s efforts to preserve and promote its historical landmarks. It also marks another milestone in the flourishing relationship between the two nations, which has seen a surge in cultural exchange and tourism.

A gateway to Saudi Arabia’s historic treasures

AlUla, one of Saudi Arabia’s premier tourist destinations, has been attracting a growing number of global visitors, particularly from China. International visitor numbers to AlUla rose by 44% in 2023, reflecting the region’s increasing popularity. This exhibit aims to further promote AlUla as a must-visit destination for Chinese tourists, showcasing its cultural and historical significance through breathtaking photographs and videos.

In addition to AlUla, the exhibit features stunning visuals of Diriyah Gate, another key heritage site that is undergoing extensive regeneration under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. Both AlUla and Diriyah are home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites—Hegra in AlUla and Al Turaif in Diriyah. These sites not only embody the ancient civilizations that shaped Arabia but also represent Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving its rich heritage while embracing modern tourism.

Deepening cultural exchange between Saudi Arabia and China

The exhibition follows the success of the “AlUla, Wonder of Arabia” exhibit, which was held at Beijing’s Forbidden City UNESCO World Heritage Site in January 2024. This earlier exhibit, which displayed AlUla’s natural landscapes and rare archaeological artefacts from the Royal Commission for AlUla’s (RCU) collection, drew over 221,000 visitors, prompting organizers to extend its run by an extra month.

This momentum of cultural exchange has been bolstered by the recent signing of a strategic partnership between RCU and China’s Cultural Heritage Administration in Henan province. The partnership aims to support heritage preservation while expanding Saudi Arabia’s global cultural network, fostering deeper ties with China.

Dr. Abdulrahman AlSuhaibani, Vice President of Culture – Tourism at RCU, emphasized the importance of this exhibit in promoting Saudi-Chinese cultural exchange. He noted, “Saudi Arabia, AlUla, and China share a long and rich history that spans trade, art, culture, and more. The launch of this new exhibit will further promote ongoing cultural exchange, strengthening existing ties.”

He added, “By featuring AlUla in the Saudi Travel Festival exhibition, we are placing the many wonders, experiences, and attractions of northwest Arabia in the spotlight so that they can be discovered and explored by Chinese guests, as tourists or visiting academics.”

The role of AlUla in Saudi Arabia’s vision 2030

The exhibition is not just a celebration of AlUla’s historical significance but also a reflection of Saudi Arabia’s broader commitment to sustainable development and cultural preservation, as outlined in Vision 2030. The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), established by royal decree in 2017, has played a central role in ensuring that the development of AlUla remains both responsible and sensitive to the area’s natural and historical heritage.

RCU’s long-term plan aims to preserve AlUla’s cultural and environmental integrity while also establishing it as a vibrant hub for tourism, education, and the arts. This aligns with Saudi Arabia’s efforts to diversify its economy, empower local communities, and enhance its global cultural presence. The new agreement between Saudi Arabia and China strengthens this vision, as the two countries continue to collaborate on preserving heritage and expanding tourism.

A growing global interest in AlUla

The global interest in AlUla as a cultural destination has steadily grown, fueled by its unparalleled combination of natural beauty and ancient history. From the towering rock formations to the mysterious tombs of Hegra, AlUla offers an immersive experience that connects visitors to the ancient world while embracing modern, sustainable tourism practices.

For Chinese tourists, AlUla offers a unique opportunity to explore a region rich in history and culture, where the ancient civilizations of Arabia come to life. The Saudi Travel Festival exhibition in Beijing serves as a powerful reminder of the deep-rooted cultural connections that unite Saudi Arabia and China, further strengthening the bond between the two nations.

As Saudi Arabia continues its journey of cultural revival and global engagement, AlUla stands at the forefront of this transformation, inviting the world to discover its wonders.
